Earthquake in China, Four Killed and 24 Injured

Local officials said on Tuesday that four people were killed and another 24 injured when an earthquake shook southwestern China. The shallow quake hit late Monday evening in Qiaojia county, the Yunnan government said on their social media page. Video clips on China’s Twitter-like website Weibo showed shoppers taking cover in a supermarket as boxes fell off the shelves, whereas students elsewhere in a classroom tried to hide underneath their desks before covering their faces with textbooks.

According to China’s government seismology authority, the quake hit near the town of Zhaotong, which has a population of over six million and registered 5.0-magnitude. Around 600 rescue personnel, including firefighters and soldiers from of the local division of the People’s Liberation Army, in the disaster area, the Yunnan government state.

Images on social media showed rescue personnel combing with broken tiles and concrete over debris and streets littered. As people leave houses, they see jumping over debris. Also, trying to stop rocks falling on a road while riding a motorcycle. China regularly attacks by earthquakes, particularly in its western and south-western mountainous regions.

Last year a powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit in the province of Sichuan. It kills 13 people and injures nearly 200, damaging a large number of buildings. In 2008, a powerful 7.9-magnitude quake in Sichuan left 87,000 people dead or missing.
