A suicide bomber killed at least three people and wounded 15 others in the first attack to rock the Afghan capital in weeks after detonating explosives near a military outpost in Kabul on Wednesday, an official has reported. Speaker of the Interior Ministry Tareq Arian announced the death count, calling the blast “a crime against civilians by the enemy of Afghanistan during the month of Ramadan” The assault appeared to hit a special Afghan forces camp just outside Kabul, a security source told AFP.
No group claimed responsibility for the incident. But Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, states they investigate whether their fighters responsible for the attack. The blast comes as violence has spread across Afghanistan, with the UN reporting earlier this week that attacks escalated in the country after a historic US and Taliban agreement was signed in late February, which was expected to pave the groundwork for a peace process. Latest assaults mainly restrict to rural areas and small towns. The insurgents have decided not to assault towns under the US-Taliban agreement.
The agreement formed a mechanism to put an end to America’s longest war. It is after the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan that only toppled the Taliban government. It is for them to re-emerge and launch a deadly insurgency. But, in recent weeks, talks between the Kabul government and the Taliban stall out. Dozens of Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters have died almost daily. It is with civilian casualties increasing across the country as operations are ramping up on both sides. Kabul spares the brunt of the crime. A series of attacks targeting ethnic groups, however, proves the city is still vulnerable to militants.
