Wilson Roosevelt Jerman, who served more than five decades as a White House butler, died of COVID-19 at the age of 91, local media report. Wilson Roosevelt Jerman was among the longest-serving staff in the White House, fondly recalled in a statement on Wednesday by former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush. In 1957 Jerman joined workers at the White House. He played positions from former presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower to Barack Obama, first as a housekeeper and later as a doorman and butler.
In an interview, Granddaughter Jamila Garrett said that despite establishing a friendship with the first couple, it wasn’t until former President John F. Kennedy came into office in the 1960s that her grandfather was elevated to the butler.
Her mother also had to work closely with the Bushs when former President George H. W. Bush took office, according to Garrett.
Garrett took the opportunity in her interview with the news station. It is to applaud former first lady Michelle Obama, whose husband was the last president. It is under whom Jerman served, for having included a photograph of her grandfather in her recent memoir “Becoming.”
Garrett said she wanted the world to recognize her grandfather as a ‘really authentic’ individual.
